Richard L. "Dick" Redman, 68, of South Bend, Ind., passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday, May 5.

He was born Nov. 14, 1935, in Mishawaka, Ind., a son of Tony and Catherine (Heiser) Redman. Dick grew up in South Bend where he graduated from Adams High School in 1953.

He attended trade school for plumbing and heating, becoming a licensed plumber; his specialty was pipefitting. He was employed by E.J. White Plumbing and Heating for several years. With a partner, Dick owned and operated PHA, Inc., and later he returned to E.J. White as an estimator.

Dick served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. Dick enjoyed antique cars, and at one time owned a 1940 Chevy Coupe. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting trips out west. Dick was also a fisherman and there were many family fishing trips to Wisconsin. He was also a handyman and an excellent carpenter. He recently enjoyed building birdhouses. Most of all, Dick's family held a special place in his heart, and they will all miss him greatly.

On Sept. 10, 1960, Dick married the former Andrea Jane Spencer, who preceded him in death in 1989. On April 6, 1991, Dick married Sharon (Huffman) Marganti, who survives. Other surviving family members include his mother, Catherine of South Bend; two daughters, Rita Redman of Indianapolis, Ind., and Janet (Joe) Hutsell of Ligonier, Ind.; two stepsons, Michael (Rhonda) Marganti of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mark Marganti of LaPorte, Ind.; three stepdaughters, Kathi (Tim) Irons of Duluth, Minn., Karen Mitchell of South Bend and Teresa (Jeremy) Cirks of Champagne, Ill.; his brother, Charles (Sally) Redman of Mishawaka; and 19 grandchildren whom he dearly loved. Besides his first wife, he was also preceded in death by his father in 1993.

Friends may spend time with Dick's family from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill St., Mishawaka, with Rev. Fr. Robert Yast officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or to Hospice of St. Joseph County. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
