SOUTH BEND - Thomas A. Troeger, M.D., 79, beloved husband of Patty L. Troeger, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28, 2016, at his home in South Bend. Born on July 14, 1937, in South Bend, he was the son of the late Earl and Esther (Steiner) Troeger. He was a graduate of John Adams High School in South Bend, of Indiana University in Bloomington, and of Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. On August 10, 1957, Tom was married to Patty Lou (Bourdon) of South Bend, and the two shared their lives in committed and loving matrimony for more than 59 years. Dr. Troeger practiced medicine in South Bend from 1968 until 2007. His greatest achievements in life were as an exemplary husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; he was passionately devoted to his countless medical patients, to the entire St. Joseph County medical community including the two hospitals in South Bend, Memorial and St. Joe, to the betterment of education for all of South Bend's children; and to his treasured Hoosiers of Indiana University. His loyalty and commitment to all things cream and crimson, including to the forever faltering football team, were steadfast and unwavering. While his heart was always happiest at his home in South Bend, he truly loved as well the time spent with his family on Birch Lake, MI, on Captiva Island, FL, and in Glen Arbor, MI. Surviving Dr. Troeger, in addition to his wife, are his loving children, Tracey (George) Iams, Troy (Bryan) Bergin, Tamara (Michael) Alby and Todd (Hortencia) Troeger; his twelve cherished grandchildren, Tyler (Sophia), Wade (Brittany), Brady, Corey, Reiley (Jennifer), Allison, Dillon, Emily, Hannah, Claire, Rachel and Trent; and his two beautiful great-grandchildren, Ada and Theodore. He is also survived by his brother, Earl Troeger, and seven nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Jack Troeger. Dr. Troeger interned at Memorial Hospital, South Bend; was a captain in the United States Army, Fort Benning, Georgia; served his fellowship in internal medicine, hematology and oncology, at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis; was the founding physician of Michiana Hematology-Oncology, P.C.; a director of the South Bend Medical Foundation; the first director and associate dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame, where his name is memorialized at the Troeger-O'Malley Medical Student Library; a past president and member of the Board of Directors, South Bend Education Foundation; a member of the Board of Directors for the South Bend Center For Medical Education; a recipient of the Silver Owl award, fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, Zeta Chapter; recipient of the John Adams High School 1992 distinguished alumnus award; along with wife Patty a member of the President's Circle, Indiana University; a member of Morris Park Country Club; and a member of Zion United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fri., Dec. 2, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sat., Dec. 3, at Zion United Church of Christ, St. Peter St. There will be a graveside service in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
