Karen Sue Kapson

SOUTH BEND - Karen S. Kapson, 60, of Northbrook, IL, passed away January 4, 2009. She was born January 6, 1948, in South Bend, IN, to the late Jordan H. and Bette M. Kapson.
She is survived by her brother, Craig (Carol) Kapson; a sister, Nancy Kapson; nieces, Denise (Joel) Kaplan and Heather (Brian) Lazarus; a nephew, David (Heather) Kapson; great-nieces and nephew, Betsy, Ben and Rebecca; and her beloved dog, Juicy, who kept her fighting until the end.
In 1996 Karen was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award for the American Cancer Society. This recognized her extraordinary fundraising efforts. During one year, she chaired three major events for the society. Karen's strong commitment to fight cancer came as a result of her mother's death from this terrible disease. Over many years, she chaired a number of events, including Relay for Life, and was chosen to be on the Florida Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society.
Karen had a master's degree in science, and she spent a great deal of her life in the fashion world before her mother became ill. She was a professor at Keiser College in Florida, and also taught at Bauder College in Florida as an instructor and counselor.
She was in sales and merchandising for Polo Ralph Lauren. She ran two boutiques for an absentee owner. She was an account executive for the campaign division of United Way of Dade County, Inc.
Karen was always trying to make others feel good, in a variety of ways.
She will be remembered as a driven individual, who wouldn't stop until the task was completed. No matter how tired she became, she charged ahead. She was always dressed immaculately.
Karen will be deeply missed by her loving family and many friends. We bid her farewell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, at Temple Beth-el. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
