SOUTH BEND - Mr. Norval J. Williams, 69, who resided on Rumford Drive, South Bend Indiana passed from this life on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 in Memorial Hospital. Norval was born on July 19, 1944 in South Bend, Indiana to the union of Samuel and Birdie (DeMar) Williams.


In 1969 he married Sareena (Jones) Williams. The two were blessed with two girls, Apryl (Minister Donald Taylor) and Tori Williams, and four beautiful grandchildren, Kylen Hunter, Kaden Taylor, Kashlyn Williams and Chase Williams. Other loving family members who survive include his siblings, William Williams (Judy), Samuel Williams (Judy), Gilbert Williams (Pat), Larry Williams (Rosie), and John Williams (Francine). Norval also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family members who preceded him in death are his father, Samuel Williams; mother, Birdie Williams; and sister, Vonda (Williams) King.

He graduated from Adams High School in 1963 and after graduating joined the USMC. He was stationed in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969. His lifelong aspiration was to become a South Bend police officer. Prior to his discharge from the Marine Corps he contacted the South Bend police in order to achieve his goals to serve and protect. Norval served in many capacities during his years with the police department. One of his passions was working with the Special Olympics. He served as Director of the International Special Olympics when it was held here. Norval also was security for many celebrities -- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley, Michael Warren and a host of others. He also worked as security for Oprah Winfrey for over 10 years. Norval was a member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church; he enjoyed the fellowship in morning worship service and the outside tent services. One of Norval's passions was assisting. He was a nurturing soul and had no problem bringing individuals home who did not have a place to go. One of the characteristics that most people loved about Norval was his great sense of humor. He loved to make others laugh. One of his favorite sayings was, "If you see me fighting a bear, help the bear, don't help me." Norval retired from the South Bend Police Department in 1997 after 27 years of service. After "retiring" he served as Director of the Juvenile Justice Center. He later became the Assistant Chief of St. Joseph County Police and ended his career when he became ill, as the Director of Security of Ivy Tech.

Services for Norval Williams will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon and funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Private burial will take place at Highland Cemetery. Visit www.clarkoneal.com to sign his guest book.
