SOUTH BEND - Marilyn Jane (Miller) Wright, affectionately known as "Jay" to some family, friends, and co-workers, was the middle child born to Henry and Minnie (Whiteside) Miller Brown on April 3, 1949, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Both parents preceded her in death. Marilyn was also blessed to have had a wonderful stepfather, Daniel L. Brown of Knoxville, Tennessee. Although Marilyn was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, she grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and was educated in the South Bend Public Schools: Perley Elementary, Jefferson Jr. High School, and was a 1967 graduate of John Adams High School.

While growing up in South Bend, she attended First AME Zion Church under the leadership of Reverends Hutchison and Crockett. Marilyn attended Vincennes University and Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis. She was employed at IUPUI for a total of over 44 years, ending her Indiana University tenure at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law where she worked for over 37 years.

Marilyn was involved in several organizations during her life. Marilyn was a member of the IUPUI Staff council at its onset, serving three terms. She was an active volunteer for the CAACW, Consortium of African-American Christian Women. She was a member of the South Bend Eastside Reunion Planning Committee from 2008 through 2011. During the 1980s, she also operated her own business, The Wright Looseleaf Filing Service, through which she serviced law firm libraries and practicing attorneys by maintaining their loose leaf services.

Marilyn loved reading and writing and kept many journals during and after her participation in various writers' groups throughout Indianapolis. She also loved creating personalized greeting cards for friends and family.

Marilyn is survived by her wonderful husband of 46 years, Nathaniel; two sons, Steven and Timothy, Sr. (Marie); three stepchildren: David (Cynthia) Wright, Cheryl Shannon, and Jazz Wright; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandsons, all of Indianapolis. Her siblings, who she always said were her best friends, Maurice Miller (Dalayna) of Indianapolis, and Marian Miller (Brent) Nicks-Walker of South Bend; and two stepbrothers, Daniel Brown of Los Angeles, California, and Edward Brown of Knoxville, Tennessee; a first cousin, Ralph Woods (Melinda) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Services for Marilyn will be held Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Stewart Memorial CME Church, 1745 Minocqua Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46203. Visitation is from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with funeral services following.
