SOUTH BEND - Arthur Lewis Tate, 58, residing in South Bend, passed away at 4:00 am Friday, April 29, 2016, in Grand Emerald Place, South Bend. He was born August 24, 1957, in South Bend, to Rev. David T. and Ruth (Woods) Tate, Sr., and remained a lifelong area resident.

Arthur gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was baptized by the late Rev. Charles G. Rowlett at Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member with his passing. He attended Linden and Pearly Elementary Schools, Jefferson Middle School and graduated from John Adams High School in 1975. He furthered his education by attending IUSB, majoring in computer science.

Arthur was a member of the Sunshine Band, Youth Fellowship Choir, Young Adult Choir and a faithful member of the Pilgrim Mass Choir, where he sang many solos. He was also a faithful member of the Pilgrim Junior and Senior Usher Board and attended Sunday School. Arthur was also a member of Judah Coral, Hilltop Choir, and the Tate Singers. He enjoyed singing and giving praise to the Lord. He was often requested to sing “I am Redeemed” and “The Center of My Joy.” Arthur was employed by Bendix Corporation in South Bend and Chandler, AZ, for 22 years. Upon returning to South Bend, he was employed by Memorial Hospital and later by the South Bend Medical Foundation, all as a medical programmer.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. David T. Tate, Sr., and Ruth Tate; two sisters, Lillie Mae and Marilyn Tate; brothers-in-law, Anthony Wayne Alley and Carlton Thomas; and nephew, Korzan (Corey) Coley. He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Dorothy (Leroy) Jones and Dora (John) Engram, both of Chicago, IL, Margaret Thomas and Barbara Tate-Alley, both of South Bend; one brother, David T. Tate of Chicago, IL; one aunt, Irene Conley of Chicago, IL; a god-brother, Rev. Marvin Bingham; a god-son, Robert Chester; and a special friend, Mattie Chester; along with a host of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Arthur will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in the Pilgrim Baptist Church, 116 N. Birdsell, South Bend. Rev. H. Gregory Haygood will officiate. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the Memorial Service.
