Sturgis, Mich. -- Joseph Rowan White, 59, of Sturgis, Mich., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born July 24, 1944, in South Bend, Ind., and at the age of three was adopted by Harry and Ruth (Sheeley) White.

Joe had resided in Sturgis since 1972, coming from Boston, Mass.

He was first married to Joan Taylor; this marriage ended in divorce. On Nov. 27, 1987, he married Julie (Hodges) DeLoach in Las Vegas, Nev.

Joe attended Mishawaka Public School in Mishawaka, Ind., and graduated from John Adams High School, where he was named to the All-City Track Team, and competed on the swimming team, and was active in the Isaac Walton League. Following his high school graduation he entered the U.S. Navy, serving from 1963-1967. He was stationed aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Essex and the U.S.S. Wasp, and was most proud to have been a part of the retrieval of spacecraft and astronauts upon their return to earth.

He is survived by his loving wife, Julie DeLoach of Sturgis, a daughter, three sons, two grandchildren and a sister.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of friends and relatives will take place at the Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion in Sturgis from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, where Joe's life will be celebrated and memories will be shared.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. White's memory consider the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the HACKMAN-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis, which is handling the arrangements.
