Pamela Jeanne Poe
Jan. 11, 1954 - Dec. 4, 1998
ROLLING PRAIRIE – A 45-year-old South Bend woman was killed in LaPorte County on Friday when her car was struck by a semi-truck.
Indiana State Police said Pam Poe was pronounced dead at the accident scene at Indiana 2 and U.S. 20, about a mile east of Rolling Prairie.
Pam Poe owned Gymnastics Michiana, 3120 N. Home in Mishawaka, with her husband, Dan. She was an Elite-rated coach and several of the youngsters coached through their program became national champions.
Poe’s commitment to young people and gymnastics is reflected in several articles on the dedicated coach published in the Tribune.
Poe was driving west on Indiana 2 around 9 a.m. while the truck, driven by William L. Murphy, 46, of Vienna, W. Va., was eastbound on U.S. 20. Murphy was making a left turn at the intersection where U.S. 20 curves northward and continues toward New Carlisle.
According to investigators, the truck hit the car on the driver’s side. Police said the truck driver had the right of way while the victim disregarded a red light. Deputy LaPorte County Coroner Lynn Swanson pronounced Poe dead at the scene.
Poe was the daughter of Richard DeVere Peiffer and Josephine Emily Jambrick and the spouse of Daniel T. Poe.
