SOUTH BEND - H. James (Jim) Paradis passed away in San Jose, California, only six weeks after a November retrospective of his ceramics, paintings, and sculpture titled, “Alternative Directions: The Art of H. James Paradis.” Over 300 friends and family members attended the exhibit.Born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Maria and Erique Paradis, Jim was reared in South Bend, Indiana. He attended John Adams High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 18, serving during WWII as a Radio - gunner in the Pacific. He was also called and served again in the Korean conflict. He leaves behind his loyal wife of 56 years, Adine; six children: Erique Paradis (Lori), Jacquie Giles (Steven), Michelle Jedych, Sheldon Friedman (Cherryl), Stephen Friedman (Brenda), and Susan Friedman; and seven grandchildren. Jim earned an MFA degree from Indiana University, Bloomington. His career spans 42 years of teaching art in South Bend schools, 28 of those as professor at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, where he was chairman of the art department for 15 years. He retired, Professor Emeritus, and in 1995 moved to The Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose, California, where he became an avid golfer, and served two terms as president of the table tennis club. He remained a loyal Notre Dame fan, adding Golden State Warriors to his list of favorites. As a volunteer in California, he taught weekly classes in ceramics and sculpture. Throughout his life, Jim created and exhibited works in ceramics, sculpture, painting, and mixed media collage, receiving numerous art awards, including recognition from the Triton Art Museum in Santa Clara, CA. He was acknowledged by the Indiana art community when covered in Fine Arts of the South Bend Region, Wolfson Press, 2014. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 19, 2018 with burial in the Memorial Gardens at St. Francis of Assisi Church in San Jose.
