Adams 1948 Barbara Ann (Smith) Wharton

SOUTH BEND - Barbara Ann Wharton, 87, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2018. Barbara was born on March 21, 1930 in South Bend to Clarence H. and Conradine Smith. On May 3, 1952 she married George William Wharton, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death are two brothers, Robert (Margaret) Smith and Richard Smith.

She is survived by a brother, William D. (Sharon) Smith of Salem, OR, and a sister-in-law, Lamarr Smith of Indianapolis, IN. Also surviving are her 3 children, Kathy Delahanty of Sarasota, FL, Debra McCay of Granger, IN, and Michael (Elizabeth) Wharton of South Bend, IN; six grandchildren, Lindsey (Judd) Schoenholtz, Anna Marie (Alex Urrutia) Matthews, Lauren (Nicholas) Fraser, Remy (Liberty) McCay, Kristina Wharton, and Nicole (Michael) Dailey; four great-grandchildren: Vera Poppy Schoenholtz; Lillian Grey and Penelope Isla Fraser; and Ayden Urrutia, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Barbara was a graduate of John Adams High School and the South Bend College of Commerce. She worked at the South Bend Tribune and WSBT before becoming a full time housewife and mother. Barbara was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and daughter who carried herself with grace, elegance, and a quiet confidence. She embraced her family and took being a wife and mother very seriously. She was passionate about her home, cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, and art. Her gentle touch and loving care will live on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends whom she touched throughout her life. 

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many caregivers and staff at Healthwin who assisted and cared for Barbara during her time there. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1:00 PM, with visitation one hour prior, at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Final Internment will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara's honor to Healthwin Specialized Care, 20531 Darden Rd., South Bend, IN 46637.
