SOUTH BEND - George William “Bill” Wharton, 89, passed away on November 15, 2017 surrounded by his children, at The Hearth at Juday Creek.

Bill was born on October 2, 1928 in Kewanna, IN to Marion and Edith (Calvin) Wharton. He graduated from John Adams High School and then enlisted in the United States Army, were he received an honorable discharge July 1948. He also served in the Indiana National Guard.

On May 3, 1952 he married Barbara Ann Smith who survives. He is also survived by his sister, Marian Ackles of Niles, MI; three children, Kathy Delahanty, Debra McCay and Michael (Elizabeth) Wharton; six grandchildren, Lindsey (Judd) Schoenholtz, Anna Marie (Alex Urrutia) Matthews, Lauren (Nicholas) Fraser, Remy (Liberty) McCay, Kristina Wharton and Nicole (Michael) Dailey; four great-grandchildren, Vera Poppy Schoenholtz, Lillian and Penelope Fraser, and Ayden Urrutia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill worked for Materials Handling Equipment Corporation for 25 years. He was also VP/Owner of Kimball Industrial Sales until his retirement.

Bill loved gardening, keeping a perfect lawn, woodworking, fishing, the Cubs and the Bears. He moved to Florida to golf and enjoy his retirement, where he also mastered making stain glass windows and lamps. Bill was a hard worker and dedicated family man, who called it like it was. His many life quotes will be remembered and cherished by family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Hearth at Juday Creek and Great Lakes Hospice for their care and support of Bill during his stay there.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at 4:00 p.m., with visitation one hour before, at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th St., Mishawaka, IN 46544.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Caring Home and Health Hospice, 2515 N. Bendix Dr. #103, South Bend, IN 46628; or VFW Post 360/American Legion 151 Burial Team, 1307 E. Jefferson Blvd., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
