Timothy Dean Madison

Nov. 27, 1950 – Aug. 24, 1974

A South Bend man was killed instantly today when his car smashed head-on into a tree on Hollyhock Rd., just north of Darden Rd.

Timothy D. Madison of 1118 E. Chalfant St., believed to be in his early or mid 20’s, died as a result of a skull fracture and crushed chest, according to County Coroner Dr. Stanley Koscielski, who pronounced him dead at the scene.

County officers said witnesses told them Madison was alone in his car traveling south at high speed at about 10:30 a.m. today when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree on the left side of the road.

Madison was thrown from the car, and the impact sheared the two-door vehicle almost completely in half lengthwise.

The body was taken to the McGann Funeral Home until identification was made. Funeral details are incomplete.

Services for Timothy Dean Madison, 23, a former Adams High School football player, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ. Elder Carl Steen, pastor, will officiate. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Alford’s Mortuary.

As a two-year regular half-back at Adams, he led the football team in scoring in 1968 and 1969 with 42 and 80 points and was an honorable mention selection on The Tribune’s All-Northern Indiana Conference team both seasons.

He led all conference scorers in 1969 with 50 points when he served as co-captain of his squad. He also was a member of the school’s 1968-69 varsity basketball team.

Madison was born Nov. 27, 1950 in South Bend, where he lived all his life. He was an employee of Cordell Industries.

Surviving are his parents, Elder and Mrs. Arthur Madison, Sr.; four brothers, Arthur, Jr., Richard and Michael all of South Bend, and James of Williamsburg, VA., and three sisters, Mrs. Diane Phillips of Los Angeles, Miss Cynthia Madison, a student of the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Miss Madison, a student at Purdue University in Lafayette.
