David Witt - Class Of 1968 VIEW PROFILE

David Witt

David A. Witt was born January 3, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana to Marshall and Marjorie Witt. Dave met the love of his life, Marilyn Anderson, at the age of 13 in 1963. They would go on to get married on May 16, 1970, and spend their lives together until Marilyn's passing in October of 2021.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, Dave left us unexpectedly to be reunited with Marilyn.

David was a proud member of the United States Air Force and he fought in the Vietnam War. After completing his service, Dave began his 30-year career with the United States Postal Service. He worked at the downtown South Bend branch.

David leaves behind a host of family and friends, including his son, Gregory A. Witt (Joelle) and his daughter, Emily A. Witt, both of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren Ethan Dowling of South Bend, Indiana, Kaitlyn and Connor Witt of New Braunfels, Texas and Bennett Strohan of Hondo, Texas. David also leaves behind his brother, Michael Witt of Mena Arkansas, and his sister, Marsha Rufer (Bruce) of South Bend, Indiana and a sister-in-law, Connie Witt of North Augusta, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brother Thomas Witt, and his sister Thyra Sallows. There are also two good boys missing him something fierce right now - his golden retrievers Barney and Andy.

David had so many cousins, nieces and nephews that it would take two pages to list them all. He was everyone's favorite uncle.

Throughout his life, Dave spent many hours with family and friends fishing local lakes. His favorite out of town spots were in Linton, Indiana and Green Sullivan State Forest. He would tell anyone that would listen about all the fish he used to catch down there. Later in life he enjoyed spending quiet hours in his boat fishing with Greg, or the grandkids. He loved to take them out to Izaak Walton League to shore fish, imparting his infinite wisdom of fishing upon us all. Dave also enjoyed camping. While a few family camping trips were indeed had, some family members did not necessarily enjoy such events as much as others so it was decided years ago that camping would be a daddy/daughter thing and many adventures were had.

David was a lifelong sports fan. He played basketball and ran track in his youth. As a father, David coached Greg in Little League and then in the Babe Ruth League. He was so proud of his boy and his pitching skills. Dave continued to coach Greg's teams until Greg graduated high school. Dave was a huge Notre Dame and Cubs fan. David finally got to watch the Cubs win a World Series for the first time in his lifetime in 2016. Dave and Emily watched all of the World Series games together. They screamed, hollered and cried when those boys won.

Dave (a/k/a Dad, Paw, Papa, Pops, Linda, Becky, Felicia) will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed talking to people. He tried his best to enjoy life. After the love of his life, his bride of 51 years left this earth, Dave struggled to find his footing. The 635 days he spent without her proved to be too much. While we are left to try and muddle through this life without him, we know that he is with Marilyn and he is once again complete.
