SOUTH BEND - Dr. Clarence "Port" Laderer passed away in Hospice House in Elkhart after an extended illness.

Port was born on April 8, 1941, to Martha Port Laderer and Lewis Carl Laderer in Pittsburgh, PA. He moved to South Bend in 1945. He graduated from Johns Adams High School and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he affiliated with the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. In 1967 he graduated from The Indiana University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in South Bend for 35 years before his retirement. He was a charter member of the South Gateway Rotary Club and served as its president. He volunteered at the St. Joseph County Literacy Council, teaching adults to read which was one of his most satisfying experiences. He also counseled adults at the child abuse and neglect counseling organization (CANCO).

On August 27, 1966, in South Bend, he married Kathleen Tinny, who survives. They have two children, Jeffrey (Colleen) and Paige (Geoffrey) Young. He adored his four grandchildren, Meredith and Caroline Laderer, and Janie and Elliot Young. He is survived by his brother, Lewis (Carmella). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, J. Kevin (Robin) Tinny of Pembroke Pines, FL, Christopher (Sandi) Tinny of Olmstead Township, OH, Michael (Nancy) Tinny of South Bend, IN, Dr. Brian Tinny of New Lennox, IL, and David Tinny of Winter Springs, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Lew, and his younger brother, Todd Park Laderer.

The Laderer family wants to thank the staff at Memorial Hospital, 11 South, Dr. Thomas Barbour and the Hospice House in Elkhart for the compassion they showed Port while in their care. They would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at The Milton Home where he happily resided for 2 1/2 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice House, The Center for Hospice Care (22579 Old US 20 East, Elkhart, IN 46516).

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, November 1, 2010, in the Palmer Funeral Home River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2010, in Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 South Francis Street, South Bend.
