SOUTH BEND - Joseph A. Taylor, 77, of South Bend, Indiana, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at 7:35 a.m. in Hospice Center of Sunnybrook. He was born to the union of Dollie Lee Taylor and Isaac Taylor in Macon, Georgia, on September 21, 1936. The family relocated to South Bend, Indiana, and Joe, affectionately known as "Joe Cool," where he enrolled in the South Bend Public Schools. Joe graduated from Adams High School in 1956. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served faithfully for seven years before being honorably discharged on September 30, 1962.

During that time in the service, he met and married Marie Garner on July 28, 1959. To this union was born three children: Wanda Rena, Joyce Marie and Veronica. After divorce, he united in holy matrimony with Betty Hopson-Taylor in November 1991. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2010.

He was also a devoted stepfather to Peter G. Allen, and a loving, devoted father to a fourth daughter, Janella Hutchison.

He was employed with the South Bend Community School Corporation for over 34 years before retiring in 1998. He later joined the Northwest Neighborhood Association where he served faithfully and took pride in helping the community and becoming a voice for the neighborhood that he lived in and loved. Joe accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was a faithful and devoted member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, South Bend, Indiana, for most of his adult life, serving on the usher board for more than 50 years.

Leaving to mourn his passing are his six brothers: Reuben (Roberta) Taylor of Detroit, Michigan, Benjamin (Marlene) Taylor, Carl (Marilyn) Taylor and David (Vera) Taylor, all of South Bend, and James (Lavonne) Taylor and Sanford (Sharon) Taylor, both of Akron, Ohio; three sisters: Alice (Bud) Milon, Louise (Charles) Green and Mary Ann (Buford) Hilliard; stepchildren: Kevin Preston, Willie Preston, Anthony Preston and Angela Preston; grandchildren: LaTonya Allen, Kenyell and Jacquese Grayson, Javonna and Yulanda Brown, Jasmine and Hope Allen, Sanaiya Wells and Amari Turner. He was preceded in death by one brother, Benner Taylor; and three sisters: Lena Mae Henry and Grace Taylor-Williams of South Bend, and Ruth Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014, in Pilgrim Baptist Church, 116 N. Birdsell Street, South Bend. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Family and friends may sign his guestbook at www.clarkoneal.com.
