Thomas Turnock - Class Of 1962 VIEW PROFILE

Thomas Turnock

Tom was born on September 1, 1944 and passed away on March 31, 2022. Tom attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school and Jane Adams High School. After high school, he served in Germany during the Vietnam war. After his discharge from the Army, Tom returned to South Bend and attended IUSB.

Tom married his wife Janet, who he met at 15, on a snowy day on January 13, 1968 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Tom was blessed with four children: Alexis Turnock (Ken Carmichael), Jill White (Lee Putman), Thomas Turnock (Jen Sanders), and William Turnock (Jessica). Tom also had five grandchildren: Parker and Martha White, Alexa Turnock and Hannah and River Turnock. He is also survived by his sister, Kate (Robert) Lott.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anne (Shaffer) Turnock; and his sisters, Mary (Turnock) Doran and Susan (Turnock) White.

Tom worked at the family-owned business, Mishawaka Furniture, first with his father-in-law, and then with his son, Thomas. The word retire was not in his vocabulary. He was a truly lucky man who loved his job and would go to work every day that he could. Through his work he instilled in his children the principles that he lived by; hard work, honesty, integrity, pride, and satisfaction in a job well done.

He always had time for his friends and family, which was most important to him. He loved to travel from Machu Picchu to the pyramids, but what gave him the most pleasure was traveling with his wife and children. He never missed an opportunity to attend his children's activities, taking the family to spring break in Hilton Head, or later in life taking his family and grandkids to Disney World. He loved being with his family at Lake Michigan, especially for holidays and birthdays. Sitting by a fire on the beach at sunset with a beer in his hand watching the kids play were among his favorite times.

We will miss the dimple in his smile, the gleam in his eye, and his wicked sense of humor.

Godspeed dearest husband, father, and grandfather – job well done.

A private burial will take place at Highland Cemetery.
