Carolyn Winters (DeArmond) - Class Of 1962 VIEW PROFILE

Carolyn Winters (DeArmond)

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Carolyn DeArmond, gained her wings on January 8, 2021 at 3:28 P.M. while residing at Briarcliff Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in South Bend, Indiana. She was 77 years of age.  Carolyn was born to the union of the late Madison and the late Marie Winters on January 10, 1943 in Sawyerville, Alabama.

Carolyn DeArmond earned her high school diploma from John Adams High School in 1959. She continued her education graduating from Indiana University South Bend with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She lived briefly in Detroit, Michigan before making South Bend her final home.

Carolyn accepted Christ as her personal Lord and savior at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of First A.M.E. and served as a congregational nurse, trustee, usher, and choir member until her health declined.

Carolyn was a dedicated Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital for over 30 years until retirement. She was known for her involvement in multiple organizations, such as: Women On The MOVE, National Black Nurses Association, Congregational Nurse Program, and African-American Women In Touch. Carolyn served on the board for African-American Women In Touch. She took pride in advocating for African-American women’s health by organizing health fairs and working as an instructor at Ivy Tech Community College.

Carolyn loved the finer things in life. She took pride in her appearance and was known for being a very "classy" lady, with a love for shoes. She was a dedicated servant and leader who loved her church and family. Carolyn often put the needs of others in front of her own and helped support several family members.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Traci DeArmond of Detroit, Michigan; four sons: Michael DeArmond, Mercer DeArmond, Steve DeArmond all of South Bend, Indiana and Reginald DeArmond of San Jose, California; a special daughter, Duel Groves-Shell (and Henry); 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters; Mary Beale of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Lucendia Long of Sawyerville, Alabama; a special cousin-sister, Geraldine Watson of Mishawaka, Indiana along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, Carolyn was also preceded in death by her grandparents,  Arthur and Maria Pitts, a brother, Arthur (Sonny) Winters and a cousin Lula Groves.

To honor Carolyn’s memory, please feel free to donate to any organization that  focuses on the advancement of African-American women’s health.
