Motorcyclist, 20, Killed in Crash
Hits Dump Truck on Gumwood Rd.

A 20-year-old youth, described by friends as a motorcycle enthusiast, was killed instantly Friday in a two-vehicle crash four miles northeast of South Bend.
County police identified the victim as Douglas A. Lung, 801 S. 23rd St.

Officers said the crash occurred near Brick and Gumwood Rds., about 4 p.m.
Officers Jerry Rowe and Michael Brown said that the Lung cycle was westbound on Brick when it and a dump truck, driven by Courtney C. Bratcher, 61, of Hammond Trailers Park collided. The truck was southbound on Gumwood, said investigators. After impact, the cycle burst into flames.

Bratcher told officers he drove his truck alongside the shoulder of the road, jumped out of his vehicle, and pulled the victim from the burning cycle. Bratcher was able to carry the victim about 20 feet from the wreckage when police squad cars arrived.
Dr. Stanley Koscielski, St. Joseph County coroner, pronounced Lung dead at the scene. The coroner attributed death to a fractured skull, broken neck, multiple injuries, and burns.

Investigators said the cycle struck the back of the truck, near the rear wheels.
Bratcher told police that his vision was obscured partially by a shrub line on the northeast corner of the roadway.

No skid marks were visible from the cycle, said police. County officers were assisted by State Police in the investigation. A Fire Department pumper was sent to the scene.
Lung was born at Wolf Lake, Ind., June 23, 1951, and came to South Bend as a child. In addition to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Lung, he is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Louie Sacks, of Wanatah; two brothers, Bradley and Stephen, both at home.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Hollis Funeral Home, South Bend, where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Rev. Carl Lemna, of the River Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Entombment will be in the Riverview Mausoleum.
