Shirley Weingarten

May 8, 1950 - Dec. 17, 2015

SOUTH BEND - Shirley Weingarten, 65, passed away after fighting to stay alive for many years confronted with multiple challenges. She was born to the late Rose and Jake Weingarten in South Bend on May 8, 1950. She attended school locally and was a 1969 graduate of Adams High School. After graduation, she volunteered for many years until she landed a job at the University of Notre Dame in Food Services. A loyal worker, she took early disability retirement after an accident. Shirley enjoyed people and for the many years she lived in assisted living she was the unofficial “greeter” for the facilities.

Shirley is survived by her siblings: Eileen Weingarten of South Bend, Harvey (Carin) Weingarten of Granger and Leonard (Darlene) Weingarten of South Bend. She is also survived by many cousins locally and distant who were raised more as siblings than as cousins, as the family would say with one foot on the boat from Europe. In addition to her siblings, she is also survived by her loving nieces: Dr. Flynne (David) Weingarten of New York City, Dr. Jori (Steven) Weingarten of Dallas, and Dr. Peri Weingarten of New York City. Two additional Great-Nephews: Lennox and Rowan Young, also survive of New York City.

Over these many years of care, the family would like to extend their thanks to all of her caregivers and those friends who extended themselves to enhance her life. It was a challenging life that she fought hard to extend. Services will be held at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery Chapel today, December 18, 2015, at noon. There will be no visitation.

Contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to the Jake and Rose Weingarten Fund of Sinai Synagogue, 1107 East LaSalle Ave., South Bend, IN 46617.
