SOUTH BEND - Richard M. Berger, 72, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 9, 1945 in South Bend to Alvin Berger and Mary (Bickwermert) Berger.

On May 7, 1971, in St. Anthony De Padua Church, he married Sue Ellen Mishler, who survives. Richard is also survived by two daughters, Tammie (Braden Scott) Berger and Erica (Kevin) Futa both of South Bend, Indiana; one son, Michael Berger of Fishers, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth and Kenneth Piatt; Kaitlynn, Aubrey, and William Berger; Conner, Madison, and Jackson Futa; two sisters, Sister Mary Philip, O.S.B. of Ferdinand, Indiana and Carolyn (Greg) Grzesk of South Bend, Indiana; five brothers, Thomas (Hattie) Berger of South Bend, Indiana, Alvin Berger of Kokomo, Indiana, Stephen (Linda) Berger of South Bend, Indiana, George (Judy) Berger of Niles, Michigan, and Philip (Cindy) Berger of Foresthill, California; and by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Mary Berger; and his brother, Kenneth Berger.

Richard retired from Honeywell after 31 years of service as a security guard. He was president of the SPFPA Local #7 Union for several years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #553. Richard enjoyed coaching and umpiring at East Side Little League for many years. Richard treasured his family and friends as life's greatest blessings; time spent with them was a priority. Richard loved talking and joking with everyone. He had a big heart and big laugh that touched many lives. He was loved and will truly be missed by all of his family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in St. Anthony De Padua Church. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A visitation will also take place from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Monestary of Immaculate Conception, Ferdinand, Indiana; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
