GRANGER - Charles R. Ekstrand, 69 years old, residing in Granger, Indiana, passed away at 12:42 am Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart, Indiana. Charles was the Director of Redevelopment for City of Mishawaka. He retired in 2002 after 30 years of service.
Charles was born on January 2, 1947 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Carl and Albertina (Zimmerman) Ekstrand. He was born and raised in River Park and was a proud “river rat”.
On June 6, 1969 in South Bend, Indiana Charles was united in marriage to Maribeth “Beth” (Bierenga) Ekstrand.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Beth; two sons, Matthew C. Ekstrand of Granger and Michael D. Ekstrand of South Bend; one grandchild, Jeremy Kurfman of Mount Sterling, Illinois; and two sisters, Helen (Richard) Fields of Elkhart and Carolyn (Norman) Deady of Florissant, Missouri.
Charles loved Notre Dame Football, Penn Football, the Beach Boys and Drag Racing. As a drag racer he was undefeated in his ‘67 GTO. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, South Bend.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, July 29, 2016 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 805 S. 29th Street, South Bend, with viewing from 9:00 am until time of services. Rev. Stephen Latzke, pastor of the church, will officiate.
