After graduating from the University of Texas law school in Austin, I was a U.S. Justice Department trial lawyer in Washington D.C., and then a Federal Prosecutor, a lawyer in private practice, the Federal Public Defender, and a U.S. Magistrate Judge, all in Iowa. I've been married twice and have 8 wonderful children and 6 grandchildren.

School Story

I'm not someone who spends a lot of time fondly remembering high school. I don't have bad memories from high school, but the truth is my time at JAHS is now mostly a blur; I don't recall much at all about the time between September 1961 and June 1965, except of course the day of the Kennedy assassination, which is seared in my memory. I do recall that in high school I was remarkably unaccomplished and almost completely below the radar. I was slightly above average in most of my classes, but I was totally unsuccessful socially and in the few school activities in which I participated. I don't recall ever having found a date for a movie, dance, or anything throughout high school. In fact, I don't think I was even able to find someone who would dance with me in any of my frequent Friday night forays to "First Meth." (True, but that was supposed to be a joke.) I'm sure for much of my time in high school, and probably for many years after that, I was occasionally a jerk, and often worse than that. For anyone who suffered as a result of my lack of empathy or consideration, I truly apologize. My strongest recollection from JAHS is being unfairly held responsible for some misconduct by Mike Aronson in Mr. Weir's math class. I finally got over this last incident about 10 years ago, when Mike confessed his misdeed to me over a drink and apologized. :) I guess that's about it, except that I did have some good friends who helped navigate my 4 years of high school, and I thank them for that. In fact, I’m sure there were many other kind and considerate people in our class. I hope they all are doing well, and I send them my best wishes. Since high school, my life has been filled with ups and downs, but sooner or later I learned something from most of those experiences. Fortunately, for the past 30 years or so, my life has been filled with only a few downs and a lot of ups, which I credit to my wife Darci and my 8 children, as well as my extended family, including my brothers and sisters, and my friends. My life is now nearly a completed work, and I can honestly say I have few regrets with which I haven’t come to terms. I believe I will go out happy and fulfilled.
