Br. John Freienstein, OFM Cap., 74, a resident of St. Lawrence Friary, Mt. Calvary, died at All About Life Rehabilitation Center in Fond du Lac, Wis. on Friday, Dec. 11, 1998.

He was born on July 25, 1924, in South Bend, Ind., a son of the late John Peter and Agnes Kode Freienstein. He graduated from John Adams High School in South Bend in 1942, and then entered the Navy. After being discharged 6 years later, he joined the Air Force reserves and was activated during the Korean Conflict in 1951. He was on active duty for 17 years.

In 1969, he joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order as a postulant. He made his first profession of vows at Huntington, Ind. in 1971. Br. John served as the business manager and bookkeeper at the friary in Huntington for 5 years and then was transferred to St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, Wis., where he remained for the rest of his life. He worked in the business office for 10 years and then held several supervisory jobs before retiring from the seminary staff several years ago.

Besides his Capuchin Brothers, he is survived by three sisters, Mary Freienstein of South Bend, Dorothy Harper (James) and Margaret Shingledecker (Owen), all of Mishawaka, Ind.

A funeral mass for Br. John will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Lawrence Seminary Chapel in Mt. Calvary. The Rev. Daniel Fox, OFM Cap., will be presiding.

Visitation will be after 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Friary Cemetery of Mt. Calvary.

The Huss Funeral Home, St. Cloud, Wis. is serving the Capuchin Order.
