SOUTH BEND - Edward L. Carlson, 73, died September 4 at his home. A lifelong resident of South Bend, Ed grew up in the neighborhood of River Park and graduated from John Adams High School.

One summer afternoon at Potawatomi pool, he met Phyllis M. Horvath, whom he married on June 23, 1962. She survives with their three children, Lynette (Paul) Hobgood of Raleigh, NC, Jim (Alicia) Carlson of Indianapolis, IN and Dan (Connie) Carlson of Atlanta, GA; and eight grandchildren, Eleanor, Ines and Olivia Hobgood of Raleigh; Grace, Sarah and Jacob Carlson of Indianapolis; Trevor and Cassidy Carlson of Atlanta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy (Blair) Carlson; his sister, Shirley Carlson; and his brother John Carlson, all of South Bend. Ed loved his family, vacations at Tybee and Hilton Head islands, the Chicago White Sox, Notre Dame football, and playing golf. After 40 years at Bayer Corporation, where he served as a director, Ed was happy to spend winters in Naples, FL in retirement.

During summers back home in South Bend, he enjoyed the Wednesday morning Bayer Retirement Golf League and his regular foursome at Elbel Park, as well as tending his always-meticulous garden.

Friends may call on Saturday, September 7, 2013 beginning at 9 a.m. at Clay Church, 52866 Ironwood Road, South Bend, followed by a service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kim Bloom officiating. Memorials may be made to The Center for Hospice Care, 4220 Edison Lakes Parkway, Suite 210, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
