A  20-year-old former South Bend resident was killed Monday morning in the Hawaiian Islands when a motor scooter he was driving was hit by a truck.

Dead is Thomas Kaiser, a 1958 graduate of John Adams High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kaiser of LaPorte.

Kaiser and another South Bend resident, D. J. West, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard West, 134 S. 29th St., were driving separate scooters in Honolulu Monday when they were met by a truck being driven on the wrong side of the street.

According to West, he was able to swerve to the side of the street but Kaiser was hit by the truck. He was taken to a hospital in Honolulu and died during surgery. West was not injured.

Kaiser was born in LaPorte on July 26, 1939. Following graduation from high school he attended Indiana University, Bloomington, for a year and went to Hawaii last September.

He was joined there in February by West and George W. Esterline, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Esterline, 2210 E. Washington Ave. West and Esterline also are 1958 graduates of John Adams High School.

At the time of his death, Kaiser was employed as an ambulance driver for a hospital in Honolulu.  He was also a member of the Honolulu Security Police. He had lived with his parents at 1106 S. 25th St., until last spring when the family moved to LaPorte.

He is survived by his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Tanger of LaPorte; Mrs. Irene Baiz of Mishawaka and Kathryn at home, and his grandmother, Mrs. Edward Kaiser of Chicago.

The body will be returned to the Kelly Funeral Home in LaPorte. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Kelly Funeral Home, LaPorte. Rev. A. C. Van Rie, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, LaPorte, will officiate and burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery there.
