SOUTH BEND - Craig McCowan, 76, residing in South Bend, passed away at 4:15 pm Saturday, March 23, 2013 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. He was born June 5, 1936 in Fall River, Massachusetts to the late Milton Douglas McCowan and Eudelle Loren (Manchester) Curtis.


On September 28, 1978 in Las Vegas, NV, Craig married the former Edna Mae Keller, who preceded him in death on November 26, 2002.

Craig is survived by stepdaughters, Susan (Timothy) Strowmatt of Mishawaka and Gaye (William) Kruggel of South Bend; stepsons, Ronald Morros of Ft. Wayne, IN and Dennis (Elly) Morros of Morocco, IN; nine grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Craig was a 1954 graduate of Adams High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Army as an Assistant Gunner from April 21, 1958 to April 20, 1961. Craig was the first Zookeeper at Storyland Zoo and became the first Zoo Director in 1970. He began working for the Parks Department in 1954 at the age of eighteen. He held other positions for the Parks Department which included general laborer, carpenter, and construction maintenance. In 1992 he became a skilled Trades Foreman, specializing in intricate scroll saw work. Craig also enjoyed various hobbies in woodworking, cooking, gardening, reading and collecting Lionel trains.

There will be no funeral services. Inurnment will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, South Bend is assisting the family with arrangements.
