Rodger LaMar Hover

Rodger LaMar Hover

Jan. 26, 1935 - Aug. 19, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Rodger LaMar Hover, 77, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 19, 2012, in his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the love of his three children as he ended this journey and found peace in God's Kingdom.

Rodger, born January 26, 1935, was the son of Clifford Lee and Edith Berniece (Stansbury) Hover of South Bend and LeHigh Acres, Florida. They preceded him in death along with a brother, Loren, who passed before Rodger was born.

Rodger grew up in River Park and graduated from John Adams High School. He then proudly served his country as a member of the Indiana National Guard where he trained as an expert marksman. He began his career at Bendix Missile, was later employed by Carlton Financial Computations, and retired from BART Tool Supply. His passions included annual fishing trips with his buddies to Canada and shorter trips to Michigan where they caught fish and conjured up stories. These trips provided many wonderful times as his family gathered for the resulting fish fries. Rodger also was extremely proud of restoring his 1978 Corvette which won many awards in car shows and which he often referred to it as "my baby." He was meticulous about his lawn, and enjoyed the beauty of the nature that surrounded his home. He liked to attend and watch NHRA drag racing events as well as watch NASCAR races with his daughter, Sheri. He rooted for the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and often liked napping through many of these! He was interested in history and enjoyed watching old war movies while staying up late eating a huge bowl of ice cream. He had a keen interest in electronics, and had an impressive collection of guns and a vast collection of music, particularly jazz and Pink Floyd. He was a Jack of all trades and Master of all. He could fix almost anything, and when he couldn't, his motto was "Well, I can't see it from my easy chair!" Above anything, his true passion was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his children: daughter, Teri Lynn Parker, and her husband, Todd, daughter, Sheri Lorraine Hover, and son, Michael Lee Hover, all of South Bend. He was loved dearly by his grandchildren and was affectionately known as "Dat" by his grandsons, Brannon Todd, Coley LaMar and Chase Montgomery Parker. He was the world's best "Papaw" to his princess, Grace McKenna Hover, and his grandson, Maxson Michael Hover, who will carry on the Hover name. He also shared wonderful family memories with his former wife and mother of his children, Judith L. (Maggart) Woodka. He will be greatly missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews from the Maggart family. Rodger is also survived by his sister, Arlene Bergenhagen (William-deceased) of Florida, and his niece, Beth Hicks of MI.

Rodger was a strong and courageous man who was dedicated to his family and friends. Our loss is deep but we are comforted knowing he was baptized into the Catholic faith and that we will all be together again. Dad's belief brought him peace. Our belief will keep us strong. Dad will eternally be in our thoughts and prayers and he will remain in our hearts in that place that only he can fill. In Heaven Dad, the casting is endless...

Visitation for Rodger will be Wed., August 22, from 3-7 pm at Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka. Funeral service will be conducted by Msgr. Michael Heintz on Thurs., August 23, at 10:00 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where he will be laid to rest surrounded by many family members who have gone before him.

As dad had a compassion for sick children, memorial contributions in Rodger's name may be made to the Memorial Hospital Ronald McDonald House to help make the lives of children with cancer and their families a little more comforting.

The family sincerely appreciates the expressions of concern shown to dad by his friends and neighbors. The Memorial Home Care Therapy staff, particularly Susan, Fay and Ronnae, were instrumental in providing dad hope and encouragement, and for that we are forever grateful.

Fisherman's Prayer

I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day.

And when it comes to my last cast, I then most

humbly pray, when in the Lord's great landing net and peacefully asleep, that in His mercy I be judged

Big Enough To Keep.
