Nancy Sue Bernard
Jul. 26, 1935 - May 22, 1995
Nancy Sue Bernard, 59, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of South Bend, died Monday morning in a fire officials believe was caused by a discarded cigarette in her Winston-Salem condominium.
Officials from the Winston-Salem fire department said fire started in a upstairs den of Ms. Bernard's condominium at 5:19 a.m. The first units arrived on the scene at 5:24 a.m. and the fire was controlled at 5:31, according to a fire department spokesman.
A discarded cigarette ignited a couch in the den. Ms. Bernard, who was in a bedroom that is adjacent to the den, died of smoke inhalation, the spokesman said. She was pronounced dead about 7 a.m. Monday.
Mrs. Bernard was born July 26, 1935, in South Bend. She is survived by her mother, Agnes Rummel of South Bend; and two sisters, La Rue Teska of New Carlisle and Carol Plau of Bedford, Ohio.
