SOUTH BEND - Roger E. Ward, 81, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday August 15, 2015, at Cardinal Nursing Home, South Bend.

He was born on December 22, 1933, in South Bend, to the late Robert and Stella (Carr) Ward. Beloved husband of Sheila Ward, he leaves her behind. Also surviving are his daughters, Julie L. (Edward) Smith of Evanston, IL, Mara J. Shirley of Springfield, SC, Crystal L. (James) Montgomery of Athens, OH, April Ann (Dennis) Woodworth and Rebecca R. (Terry) Banks, both of South Bend; a son, Daniel J. Simons of South Bend; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, James (Lin) Ward of Westcliffe, CO. He was preceded in death by his sons, Jeffrey A. Ward and John J. Simons, a brother, Richard Ward and an infant sister.

Mr. Ward worked as a Construction Estimator for 25 years, with Reese and Son being one of the companies he worked for. He also had numerous other jobs, including as a Cable Splicer for Bell Telephone, a former Farmer, a salesman for Standard Brands Foods, Solar Systems and for Ara Parseghian at one time. Mr. Ward also worked as a custodian for St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Colfax Ave, South Bend. Roger was in the United States Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict Era. He played the clarinet in the Army Band and several other bands throughout his life. Roger won awards in High School for his talent and also played the saxophone. He was a wonderful handyman, loving to help others, as well as a gardener and animal lover.

Mr. Ward was a member of St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church, 1001 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend, where a Memorial Service will be held for him at 1 p.m. Saturday August 22, 2015. Committal services will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545-5234 or to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
