SOUTH BEND - Don Vanett, 85 years old, residing in Aloha, Oregon, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016. He was born June 10, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Lawrence and Marie (Hickey) Vanett.
Don retired in 1988 after 35 years of service with Indiana Bell. He was a member of Communications Workers of America, CWA Local 5707. He wore many hats during his time with the union as well as President and he served on many boards and committees. He traveled around the country making many speeches and he was dedicated to supporting workers for their safety and rights in the work place.
He is survived by his daughter, Debra L. Vanett of Portland, Oregon; two grandchildren, Laci R. (La-Quan) Pope and Josi L. Sprecher, they both reside in Oregon. Don was preceded in death by his son, Larry D. Vanett; sisters: Margie Simcox and Eloise Kaminski; and brothers: Dee Vanett, Roy Vanett and Ray Vanett.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, September 12, 2016, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, at 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN, where friends may visit with the family from 10:00 am until time of services on Monday. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN.
