Robert Edison Schafer, 73, of South Bend, was killed in an automobile accident in Oklahoma on January 7, 2005.

He was born in St. Joseph County on October 24, 1931, to Delbert and Mabel (Kaiser) Schafer, who have preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jeanette Manges; and his brother, Nelson (Julia) Schafer.

He is survived by his sister, Marjorie Habermann of South Bend; son, Bruce, and wife Linda, and grandsons, Edison and Shelby Schafer of Payson, Arizona; his daughter; Julia Cole, and her husband, Ronald Cole, and grandsons, Timothy and Christopher Cole of San Diego, California; his former wife and friend, Carole Schafer of Tucson, Arizona; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Indiana University and served in the Army in Germany. He was an owner, with his father and brother, of the former Oak Ridge Dairy, Home Town and Mr. Fresh Dairy stories. He was an accountant and business manager, and had many friends and clients across the country. He will be missed by all who knew him. He loved to go fishing, and had been known to fly to San Diego to go deep-sea fishing.

Graveside services will be held in St. John United Church-Christ at 63900 U.S. 331 on Sunday, March 20, 2005, at 2 p.m. Burial service handled by Community Vault.
