MISHAWAKA - Jack R. Downing, 87, of Mishawaka, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012, in his residence with his loving family at his bedside. Jack was born on April 7, 1924, in Fort Wayne, IN, to the late John R. and Jesse ( Pitcher) Downing.

Jack married his first wife, June Gillen, in 1944. Jack and June were married for 25 years. June passed away on March 17, 1969. Jack married his second wife, Patsy Fulmer, on February 21, 1970, at the First United Methodist Church in Mishawaka. Jack and Patsy just celebrated their 42nd anniversary together. Jack is survived by his wife, Patsy, and his son, Jeff (Mary) Downing of Granger, IN.

Jack was a loving and caring grandfather to four grandchildren, Tracy (Todd) Geer of Granger, IN, Tim Downing of Chicago, IL, Erin (David) Eggers of Granger, IN, and Mike (Jessica) Downing of South Bend, IN. Jack was also a great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren, Madison, Marlee, Scott, Myka, Nathan and Marin. Also surviving are a niece, Sara (Bill) Hostrawser of Granger, IN; nephew, Kent (Linda) Messersmith of Niles, MI; and niece, Jeanne Kuhman of Phoenix, AZ.

Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Phillips.

Jack graduated from John Adams High School in South Bend. Jack served his country in the United States Navy during WW II receiving an honorable discharge on December 2, 1945. Jack also received the accommodations of Bravery medal from the Secretary of the Navy. After the service Jack retired as a plumber from Edward J. White Plumbing and Heating after 40 years of service. Jack was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local #172. Jack and Patsy were members of the First United Methodist Church. Jack enjoyed sailing, any water sports, reading, and working with his hands. Jack was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and uncle to his family whom he cherished most of all.

The family is honoring Jacks wishes to be cremated. In lieu of a formal memorial service, friends and family are invited to an Open House on Sunday, March 11th, from 1-4 pm in the home of Jeff Downing at 30144 Copperwood Drive, Granger, IN. Memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Third St., Mishawaka, IN 46544; or to the donor's choice. Jack's cremains will be buried at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger at a later date. Bubb Funeral Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.
