Dorothy H. Smith, 87, residing in South Bend, passed away Monday, February 19, 2013 in Hospice House, South Bend. She was born in South Bend on October 10, 1925 to the late Paul E. and Gertrude H. (Baumgartner) Gooley, and remained in the South Bend area most of her life. On April 18, 1951 in South Bend, Dorothy married Dale B. Smith, who preceded her in death on July 26, 2001. She was also preceded by a son, Mark F. Smith; brother, William Gooley; and brother in law, Elmer Torok.

Dorothy is survived by daughters, Diane E. (Matthew) Smith Morris of South Bend and Denise A. (Michael) Walters of Granger; son, David B. (Linda) Smith of Union, OH; grandchildren, Nicole E. Smith, Marcus D. (Michelle) Smith, Erica L. (Brad) Fields, Sarah E. Morris, Daniel L. Morris, Joseph M. Morris, Jacob D. Walters and Benjamin F. Walters; as well as great grandson, Connor B. Smith. Additionally, she is survived by a sister, Jean G. Torok of South Bend; a brother, James (Sue) Gooley of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy worked as a registered nurse for 47 years beginning at St. Joseph Hospital Mishawaka, then for Dr. Rafael Rabasa, at Healthwin Hospital, and finally retiring from Regency Place in 1990. She was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and enjoyed participating in several book, bridge and garden clubs in the Michiana area.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her loving family, friends and all who had the opportunity to know her during her life's journey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, February 22, 2013 in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger. Graveside services and burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Three Rivers, MI. Friends may visit with the family 4:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, February 21, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, as well as 10:30 - 11:00 am Friday in church prior to mass.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Dorothy may be donated to St. Pius X Catholic Church or the American Heart Association of Northern Indiana, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
