Samuel Katz - Class Of 1943 VIEW PROFILE

Samuel Katz

Dr. Samuel Katz
June 11, 1925 - Feb. 16, 2021
SOUTH BEND, IN -

Dr. Samuel Katz, 95, of South Bend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving children Tuesday morning, February 16, 2021. Sam was born in Chicago, IL to Gertrude and Morris Katz and preceded in death by his older siblings, Shirley, Regina, Fanny, and Ruthie; as well as his beloved wife, Mary Ann (Bartoszewicz) Katz.

Sam is survived by his immediate family: son, Michael Katz (husband Michael Webber); daughter, Julie Tafelski (Tommy Johnson); and grandchildren, Tanner, Gabrielle, and Marisa Tafelski. Sam is also survived by sons, David and Jay Katz; and daughter, Cindy Hunt (Katz).

Sam, a rear gunner U.S. Navy Veteran in World War II, graduated from John Adams High School, as well as the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He practiced optometry in South Bend for over 40 years. Years later, former patients still remembered his exceptional service.

Affectionally known as “Papa” or “Doc,” Sam was kind, giving, and selfless. Nothing brought him more joy than being with his family. He loved to make stops at McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Burger King so much so that he befriended staff members. Every winter he would take a break from the cold and vacation in Sarasota, Florida. Sam was a longtime member of Sinai Synagogue.

The family would like to thank Memorial Hospital, Wellbrooke of South Bend, and The Center for Hospice for all their care and support.

Due to the pandemic, a private graveside funeral will be held today, Feb. 18, at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. The funeral will be live streamed on Zoom at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Sinai Synagogue or The Center for Hospice.
