Richard H. Russwurm Sr., 78, of South Bend, Ind., passed away peacefully in his home on Monday afternoon, Aug. 9.

He was born Aug. 25, 1925  in South Bend, to Francis H. and Helen Marie (DeGraff) Russwurm. A lifelong resident of South Bend, Dick was a graduate of John Adams High School. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army during the Korean War. Dick retired from Precision Wood Products where he was a partner with his son, Richard Jr. He was a life member of American Legion Post #161 in Mishawaka, Ind., where he held various offices including commander. He was also a life member of VFW Post #1167 in South Bend. Dick was a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and Honor Campers Society with the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of the St. Joseph Lodge #45 F.&A.M. After retirement Dick enjoyed woodworking, particularly making plaques. Other interests included reading, crossword puzzles, and traveling in the United States and abroad.

Most of all, the center of Dick's life was his family. They include his loving wife, Deloris, who has been by his side since before they married in December 1972; three sons, Richard H. "Rick" Russwurm (Patti) of Vandalia, Mich., D.W. "Chip" Russwurm (Debra Effertz) of Osceola, Ind., and Steven M. Kubisiak of South Bend; two daughters, Debra A. Barkley (Brian) of South Bend and Francis Jean Rowland (Lane) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five stepsons, James, Joseph, John, Jerome and Jeff Williams, all of South Bend; three grandsons, Rusty Russwurm, Sam and Jordan Rowland; eight granddaughters, Lori Boecher (Dan), Amy Evanovich, Amber Martin (Sean), Danielle Keller (Chad), Brooke Russwurm, Eve, Lea and Olivia Rowland.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert, who passed away earlier this year; and by his sister, Shirley Barber, who passed away in 1969.

Friends may spend time with Dick's family today from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 502 W. Third St., Mishawaka. Private family services will be held on Friday in the funeral home, with burial following at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

The family prefers contributions in Dick's memory be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County. Envelopes are available in the funeral home.
