SOUTH BEND - Phyllis Julia Strom, 84, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:44 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2009, in Memorial Hospital. Phyllis was born in South Bend to Nicholas and Lucinda (Williams) Kronewitter on March 15, 1925.

She married John V. Strom on June 19, 1943, in St. Monica's Church, Mishawaka, IN. Phyllis was a member of the American Business Women's Association and owned her own beauty shop (Coiffures by Phyllis) in Roseland prior to working as an Assistant Law Librarian at the University of Notre Dame from which she retired in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Strom; sister, Lorene Gentsler; son, Kevin P. Strom; daughter, Kim D. Cumberland; son-in-law, Edwin J. Nowak; granddaughter, Kristin (David) Darby; and niece, Karol Sue (Jake) Cramer.

The most important thing to Phyllis was her extensive family. Her survivors include brother, Orville (Doris) Kronewitter of Osceola, IN; son, John D. (Kay) Strom of Dowagiac, MI; daughters, Nichola V. Nowak of Columbus, OH, and Cindy L. (Greg) Daniels of Granger, IN; daughter-in-law, Debbie J. (Kevin) Strom; seven grandchildren, Tami (Scott) Stewart, Traci (Mark) Conte, Gregory (Brenda) Strom, Amanda (Bernie) Fazzini, Zachary Cumberland, Joshua Cumberland and Eryn Nowak; fourteen great-grandchildren, Alyssa Fritz, Shane Strom, Sam Strom, Asher Fazzini Nowak, Nina Fazzini Nowak, Scotty Arnold, Maya Conte, Miles Conte, Sofia Conte, Simon Conte, Aly Cumberland, Kevin Cumberland, Nicholas Stewart and Nathan Stewart; one niece, Robyn (Gerry) Karkiewicz; one nephew, Andrew (Charmaine) Kronewitter; four great-nieces, Denise (Brian) Keene, Triva (Pat) Screeton, Nicole Kronewitter and Karlie Kronewitter; two great-nephews, Mike (Amy) Cramer and Brad Springman; three great-great-nieces, Claire Cramer, Hope Screeton and Faith Screeton; three great-great-nephews, Mike Keene, Joe Keene and Ben Cramer; several dear cousins; and her best friend, Irene Card.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Private burial will take place in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff of the East Wing at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross for all the special care they gave Phyllis.
