PELLA, IA - Lester Eugene Van De Walle, 85, residing in Pella, Iowa, formerly of Granger, passed away at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, in the Northern Mahaska Nursing Home, Oskaloosa, IA.

He was born April 21, 1925, in South Bend, a son of Alfred and Thelma (Jannasch) Van De Walle, and had lived in the South Bend-Granger area all of his life until moving to Iowa. On December 29, 1946, in Mishawaka, IN, he was united in marriage to Joan France, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Kate (Robert Jones) Van De Walle of Iowa City, IA, Janet Armstrong of South Bend, Jill (Mark) Van De Walle Hoffman of Cassopolis, MI, and Patricia (Dave) Erkenbrack of Pella, IA; and a son, John Van De Walle of Granger. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Samuel Jones, Ann Jones, Jason Armstrong, Joshua Armstrong, Adrian Vanderbosch, twins, Barry and Irene Erkenbrack, Joseph Erckenbrack, Alison Van De Walle and Matthew Van De Walle; and two great-grandchildren, Lyla Grace and Hayden Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Aaron Vanderbosch in 1992. Lester served for 20 years as a firefighter with the South Bend Fire Dept. He and Joan were owners of Avenue Cut Rate in River Park for 15 years, and he retired from NuSash Window Co. Following retirement, he and Joan enjoyed spending 18 years at Diamond Lake. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge # 45, F.&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, and Orak Shrine, Michigan City.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28th, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Dennis Ingle Sr., pastor of Albright United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. today, Feb. 27th, in the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Mr. Van De Walle may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children, 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707-3392; or to the River Bend Cancer Services, 919 East Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617.
