Byron W. Smith Jr., 48, of 2631 Birchway, died at 8:20 p.m. Monday in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Smith was a foreman with the South Bend Park Department. Born on June 16, 1927, in South Bend, he had lived here his lifetime.

On Jan. 31, 1967, he married Ruth Fetters, who survives. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Augusta Ruth of Hialeah, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Condon of Mishawaka and Shelley, at home; three stepsons, Mark McDonald, at home, John McDonald of Mishawaka and Tim McDonald of Los Angeles; a grandson, and a sister, Mrs. Dolly Melville of Hialeah.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony Catholic Church, Rev. Robert Yast, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Smith was a World War II veteran and a member of Post 50, American Legion, and Chapter 1167, Veterans of  Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be made to Logan Center.
