MISHAWAKA - Karl Russell "Russ" Smith Jr., 81, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away at 8 PM Saturday, May 30, 2009, in his home.

Russ retired in 1989 from Wheelabrator Frye after 15 years of service, then continued working at Joy Manufacturing. He was born on September 5, 1927, in Mishawaka, IN, to Karl Russell Sr. and Irene (Koontz) Smith, and remained a lifelong resident.

On March 25, 1949, he married Joan Louise Ort at Gospel Center Missionary Church, South Bend, IN. Russ is survived by his wife, Joan L. Smith; one son, Stephen R. Smith of Newport News, VA; one daughter, Sharadene L. (Greg) Long of Syracuse, IN; three grandchildren, Joseph (Elizabeth) Long and David Long, both of Syracuse, and Giancarlo Smith of Newport News, VA; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie Long and William Karl Long; and one brother, Daniel L. Smith of South Dakota. Two brothers, Norman R. Smith and Robert L. Smith, preceded Russ in death.

Russ was a United States Navy veteran, having served during World War II.

He was a member of Gospel Center Missionary Church. A celebration of Russ' life will start Thursday from 4:00-8:00 PM in Palmer Funeral Home - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Friends may also visit with the family from 10-11 AM Friday in Gospel Center Missionary Church, 930 S. 30th Street, South Bend, with a celebration of his life to follow at 11 AM. Pastor Charles Hustead will officiate.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Contributions in memory of Russ Smith may be made to the Gospel Center Missionary Church Building Fund, 930 S, 30th Street, South Bend, IN 46615; or to the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
