SOUTH BEND—James E. Young, 83, of South Bend, passed away March 3, 2011, with his family by his side.

Born in Muskegon, Michigan on August 8, 1927, he was the son of the late Ferdinand Joseph and Leonora Frances (Fleckenstein) Young. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dr. L. Jeanne Young.

On June 18, 1955, James married Marilyn Y. Grinstead at Sacred Heart Church, in Notre Dame, IN, with permission being granted by Father Edmond P. Joyce, C.S.C. She survives. He is also survived by his son, James T. (Sara Anne Hook) Young; and sister, Mary Louise (Richard J.) Yeager, of Penney Farms, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was a proud Army veteran of the Korean War, serving at the Army Chemical Center, in Edgewood, Maryland. Jim's service began in 1950 and included work with the United States Air Force, as well. He was honorably discharged in 1957.

Jim was a member of the class of 1949 at the University of Notre Dame. He then received his master's degree from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1955.

Jim worked in his career as a research scientist and inventor. He worked for a number of Department of Defense contractors. During his career, Jim held over a hundred US and foreign patents. He also formed his own corporation, Elchemantic Systems, Inc.

In 2007, Jim and Marilyn retired to live at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's in assisted living.

Funeral services will be held at the Sanctuary of St. Paul's, 3602 S. Ironwood Drive, on Wednesday, March 9 at 11:30AM, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County Humane Society.
