Fred R. Barrell, Jr.

Fred was the son of Hannah Marion Pierce and Fred Barrell, Sr.

His family moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1942 where he graduated from John Adams High School.

On November 23, 1950 (Thanksgiving Day) he married Mary Ann Rydzynski.

They had three children:
Ellen Marie
Michael James
Beth Anne

He was a founding and long term member of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church.

 

Fred R. Barrell Jr., 75, of Delano Avenue, South Bend, Ind., died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, in his home.

Fred was born on Nov. 9, 1928, in Bellaire, Ohio, to Fred R. and Hannah Marion (Pierce) Barrell. His family moved to South Bend in 1942. After graduating from John Adams High School in 1946, he worked various jobs at Bordon's Ice Cream Company, Studebaker Corporation and Associates Investment Company. He found a home with Bendix Corporation where he stayed for 30 years. Fred met Mary Ann Rydzynski and they married later on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1950, in South Bend. Together they raised three children, Ellen Marie, Michael James and Beth Anne.

Fred was a founding and long-term member of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1953. After retirement in 1983 Fred enjoyed many volunteer activities. He served as a court advocate for MADD, was the treasurer of the Literacy Council for several years, and volunteered at Memorial Hospital for 14 years. He served as a board member of the Bendix Salaried Retirees Club since 1988, holding the offices of 1st vice president, recording secretary and treasurer during this time. Fred had an accounting service out of his home and was proud to be an "honest accountant."

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Ann; his three children, Ellen Marie (Dale) Mais of Valley Center, Calif., Michael James (Carol) Barrell of Columbia City, Ind., and Beth Anne (Tom) Swinford of Crawfordsville, Ind. Also surviving are his sister, Joyce Frost of Mishawaka, Ind.; six grandchildren, James and Maryellen Mais of Valley Center, Christopher and Geoffrey Barrell of Columbia City, and Bryan and Aubrie Downs of Crawfordsville; and by six step-grandchildren, Travis, Matthew, Jared, Aaron and Koy Swinford, and Heather Sallee.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1021 Manchester Drive, South Bend, IN 46615. Rev. Kenneth Peterson, pastor of the church, will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to services on Friday in the church.
