Albert Crosby Smith

Jul. 20, 1928 - Oct. 19, 2013

Albert Crosby Smith of Green Valley, a native of South Bend, IN and a resident of southern Arizona for nearly 30 years, died this past Saturday following a brief illness. He was 85. The youngest child of R. Edward and Sidney C. Smith, he was born July 20, 1928 in South Bend. His elder sister, Elizabeth (Bette) Sutton preceded him in death, though he is survived by his elder brother, James, of Naples, FL; one son, Edward, daughter-in-law Kate and grandsons Thomas & Griffin, all of San Francisco; nephew Rick Sutton and niece Suzanne Vyvyan, both of Phoenix; nephew Judson Smith of Norcross, GA; niece Judy Binder of Union, MI; lovely longtime girlfriend Debbie Homer of Green Valley; and countless friends made over a lifetime of playing golf as often as he could and taking his beloved dogs, Brutus and Buddy, to the local park.

Smith was a graduate of Indiana University, a decorated veteran of the Korean War, and a successful businessman & restaurant owner; when not playing golf he also was an avid hunter & fisherman, and a ruthlessly efficient gin rummy player. He will be missed greatly by his family, and by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held this coming Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3 pm at the Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S. Camino del Sol in Green Valley, followed at 5 pm by a celebration of life at the Cow Palace restaurant in Amado.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Tucson VA Hospital (online at www.tucson.va.gov, or via mail at Tucson VA Voluntary Services, ATTN: Kammy Kamerer for Account GPF6666, 3601 South 6th Ave, Tucson, AZ 85723), in order to honor the service and sacrifice that all U.S. veterans have made to ensure our enduring freedoms.
