William W. Grounds, Sr.

Jan. 20, 1929 - March 25, 1998

William W. Grounds, Sr., 69, residing in South Bend, Ind., was born on Jan. 20, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and passed away on Wednesday, March 25, in Riverview Hos-pital, Nobles-ville, Ind.

On July 25, 1949, he married Cherie D. Teeter-Grounds, who survives.

He is also survived by four children, Cynthia of South Bend, William Grounds, Jr., of Buchanan, Mich., Robert Grounds, Sr., of Noblesville, Ind., and Richard Grounds, Sr., of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Margaret E. Grounds of Savannah, Ga., and Anna M. Davis of Catonsville, Md.

Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Louis H. Grounds, Sr.; and by a sister, Dorothy Christensen.

Bill was an active member of the South Bend Press Club and Gridiron Shows (Hoaxes) for the past 39 years. He was the past president of the South Bend Transportation Club in 1963-64, and was past president of the Northern Indiana Motor Carriers Association in 1966. Bill was also elected as ''Man of the Year'' in 1988 by the South Bend Transportation Club for outstanding contributions to the development and growth of the transportation industry. He retired from B & P Motor Express.

In November 1967, Bill was elected 1st District Councilman in South Bend and served under Mayor Lloyd Allen for four years. During that time he was appointed to the Human Rights Commissions and negotiated with the South Bend West Side during the race riots in the late `60s.

Memorial services for Mr. Grounds will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, in Unity Church of Peace, 905 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, (219) 233-8004. Rev. Annie L. Tremble, pastor, will officiate. Mr. Ground's final resting place will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Contributions in memory of Bill Grounds may be offered to the American Cancer Society.

The Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, is handling services for Mr. Grounds.
