LAPORTE - Mr. Melvin Hahn, 82, of LaPorte passed away on January 2, 2013 at 04:15 A.M. at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, South Bend, IN after a 1 year illness.

He was born on February 22, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, IN to Oscar and Catherine (Wolfe) Hahn.

A longtime LaPorte resident, he came here in 1961 from Mt. Vernon, IN. He retired after 42 years as a Manager of Information Systems for Whirlpool.

On April 4, 1964 in LaPorte he married Janice E. Haferkamp who survives.

He attended St. John Lutheran Church and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Mt. Vernon, IN.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Korean War, member of LaPorte American Legion Post #83 and Michigan City Elks Lodge #432, former LaPorte Lions, an avid golfer & avid baseball player, and he played in the semi-pros. He loved caring for his yard, and loved his wife of 48 years and his family. His favorite saying was Tally-Ho-The Fox.

Melvin is survived by his wife; daughter, Kristi Hahn of LaPorte; son, Jason (Chrissy) Hahn of Granger, IN; daughter, Lori (Tom) Bagley of LaPorte and son Jeffery Lambert of Macon, Georgia; 6 grandchildren, Evan, Gannon, Taylor, Connor, Erin and Alanna; 3 sisters, Lillian Defendorf of Sun City, CA, Marcella Brass of Mt. Vernon, IN and Deloris Angle of Evansville, IN; 1 brother, Oscar Jr. (June) Hahn of Evansville, IN and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Olivia Brass and Elizabeth Mabrey, and 2 brothers, Robert Hahn and Clinton Hahn.

The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Essling Funeral Home, with Pastor Ronald Brauer officiating.

The visitation will be 9-11:00 A.M. on Saturday at Essling Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 111 Kingsbury Avenue, LaPorte, IN 46350 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
