SOUTH BEND - Retired Sgt. Keith "Zeke" E. Zeider, 81, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 5:48 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Keith was born on October 20, 1929, in Mishawaka, IN, to the late James Theodore and Beulah (Gundrum) Zeider, and had been a lifelong resident of the Mishawaka-South Bend area.
On April 15, 1950, in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth (Sriver) Zeider, who preceded him in death on January 29, 2010. Together, they shared the joy of being married for 59 years.
Keith is survived by his granddaughter, Nancy (John) Pfarr of Summerland, CA; his great-granddaughter, Abigail Pfarr; two sisters, Emma (Gene) Stroes of Mishawaka and Patsy Lee of Scottsdale, AZ.
His daughter, Vicki K. Eisner, son, John F. Zeider, and sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie (Ned) Stanton, all preceded him in death.
Keith graduated from John Adams High School, South Bend, and from the Police Academy. For many years he served as a police officer for the South Bend Police Department, retiring as Sergeant of the Patrol Division and Range Officer for the Pistol Range. He is noted for pioneering many programs at the SBPD. "Zeke" was a sports enthusiast, enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing, and was an avid reader of Westerns.
Memorial services for Sgt. Keith E. Zeider will be held Friday, September 16, 2011, at 11:30 AM at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where family and friends may gather from 10:00 AM til time of services on Friday morning. Chaplain Don Cornelis of the South Bend FOP and retired Police Officer Ed Friend will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 US 31 South, South Bend.
