SOUTH BENDRalph E. Banes, Jr., 67, of Aberdeen Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an illness at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, in Memor-ial Hospital.

Mr. Banes was born on Aug. 27, 1930, in Mishawaka, Ind., and was a lifelong area resident.

On March 13, 1954, in the First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, he married Ernestine Barron, who survives.

He is also survived by a sister, Betty Lou (George) Rowe of Gas City, Ind.; two nieces and a nephew, Marcia (John) Newby of Post Falls, Idaho, Teresa (Frank) Parks of Marion, Ind., and James (Maria) Rowe of Gas City, Ind.; and by his three godchildren, Denise (Chip) Dimos of Mishawaka, William F., Jr., (Gina) Graves of Crown Point, Ind., and Edward Graves of Japan.

Mr. Banes was a teacher at the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation for 26 years, retiring in 1976. He also taught at the former Kennedy School in South Bend, Schmucker, Elkhart Central High School and Concord Junior High School.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and served on the USS Delta as a pattern maker. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 360, American Legion Post 303 River Park, the National Education Association and Scottish Rite of South Bend.

Mr. Banes was also a member of Mishawaka Lodge 130 F & A.M., York Rite of South Bend and Commandry Osceola Chapter 83 R.A.M., South Bend Council, Mizpah Temple 10 of Fort Wayne, Ind., the South Bend Shrine Club, the Order of Eastern Star 598 Osceola, White Shrine of South Bend and P.W. of S., the Madison Township Lions Club, and he was a former member and past president of the River Park Lions Club.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the funeral home, with Rev. Larry Baker of the First Brethren Church, South Bend, officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
