Phillip Layman

Phillip Allen Layman

Phillip Allen Layman, 91, born in Bourbon, Indiana to Jesse Roscoe Layman and Rose Martha (Emery) Layman on February 15,1931 passed this realm to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully at home with his family around him on April 12, 2022.

Phillip was preceded in death by his brother Forrest Dwight Layman.

Phillip met his beloved wife Lola E. (Bishop) Layman in third grade at Nuner JHS and married shortly after their Adams HS graduation. Both have lived their entire lives together in River Park and celebrated 71 years of marriage. Together they raised five children, Jessica (Steven), Martin, Timothy (Clara), David (Angela), and Lisa (Brent). They gloried in their 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

His life in Christ’s service was divided first with the People’s Church and then the Olive Branch United Brethren Church. Usher, Sunday School leader, Elder, Deacon, Easter breakfast chef extraordinaire were just a few of the roles he relished in sharing. Children of all ages were instantly drawn to his authenticity, and perhaps his life as a Youth Minister was the part he played best.

Phillip proudly served in the United States Army in Korea from 1952-1954 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged. He was a cherished member of the meat cutting community, owning his own business for a time, and then working for the local supermarkets making his customers feel special for over 62 years.

Phillip passed on his love of God’s creation to family and friends through his lifelong appreciation of hunting, fishing, gardening, and love of animals.

It is impossible to remember Phil without acknowledging the passion he had for the sport of handball and was known throughout the community at the YMCA for playing at the highest levels for more than 70 years. He exemplified honorable sportsmanship and inspired others to strive for the same. He only recently retired his gloves from active play this April.

Always kind, always a witness.
