Norma Jean (Van Hove) Schmidt

Norma Jean (Van Hove) Schmidt, 90 years old, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Center for Hospice in Mishawaka. She was born January 13, 1931 in South Bend to the late Kamiel and Vera (Burke) Van Hove. On September 3, 1949, Norma married the love of her life for 71 years, James Schmidt, who survives.

Norma was a lifelong resident of Michiana. She was a graduate from John Adams High School in 1949. Norma was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mishawaka. She worked as a Bookkeeper for Connecticut Mutual before retiring.  Since retirement, Norma and James have enjoyed their winters in Winter Haven Florida. Norma enjoyed bowling and playing golf. Her favorite moments, however, were when she was able to spend them with her family.

Norma is survived by her loving husband, James; daughters, Jean (William) Dare, Jill (Gregg) Heyde, and Donna Stanley; grandchildren, Amy (Rob) Manuszak, Lisa (Tom) Thresh, James (Celeste) Dare, Carri (Armondo) Luva, Marcus (Krissy) Quimby, Camiel Quimby, Sean Stanley, and Deanna Stanley; great-grandchildren, Emily Manuszak, Noah Manuszak, Owen Thresh, Alex Thresh, Elliot Thresh, Jay Dare, Jacey Dare, Jared Dare, James Dare, Jr., Zach Quimby, Taylor Kovach, Jordan Luva, Austin Quimby, Dylan Quimby, Kierstyn Quimby, Morgan Gibson, Jillian Gibson, and Lucas Rajski; and great-great-grandchildren, Alivia Sainato and Brady Kovach. Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Kamiel and Vera; her sisters, Verna Marie and Velma; and her brother Donald.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 1:00pm at Palmer Funeral Homes-Bubb Chapel, 3910 N Main St, Mishawaka 46545. Pastor Bryan Borger will officiate. Burial will immediately follow services at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday June 4, 2021 at the funeral home and starting at 12:00pm Saturday.
