Vern Manthay, age 93, died peacefully at home on November 20, 2023. Vern was born on November 30, 1929 to Fred and Adeline (nee Schultz) Manthay in South Bend. 

Vern is survived by his son Mark, daughter Joyce, son-in-law Shawn O’Brien, and grandchildren Kate and Kieran O’Brien. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou (nee Rysticken), son Gary, and daughter Susan (Shawn) O’Brien. 

Vern met Mary Lou in Wisconsin during his service in the Army Reserves. After their marriage they moved to South Bend where Vern began his career in telecommunications for IN Bell, AT&T and Notre Dame Communications. 

Vern was a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football and basketball. He enjoyed annual fishing trips in northern Wisconsin with his son and many friends. Vern and Mary Lou were the owners of many German Shepherd dogs including his beloved Jackie. 

A private mass of Christian burial will be held, followed by interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame, IN 46556. Palmer Funeral Home -Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
