William Russell Screes
Nov. 18, 1929 – Jul. 8, 2002
Bill Screes, 72, beloved husband of Kathryn, nee Strantz, loving father of Robert and Michael (Christine), and proud grandfather of William, Rebecca and Ryan, dear brother of Sr. Jodie Screes, OP, died of cancer in his home on Monday July 8, 2002.
Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Painesville, Ohio, the son of Russell and Valerie (Murphy) Screes.
Bill came to South Bend, Ind., from Indianapolis, Ind., 57 years ago. He established the William R. Screes Agency, serving as Minnesota Life general agent for 27 years. The last 10 years, Bill has been associated with The Healy Group.
Friends often referred to Bill as “Mr. Rotary”, “Mr. Republican” and “The Good Humor Man.” Bill was past president to the Roseland Rotary Club and a member of the Granger Rotary Club. He served as Rotary International District Governor 1993-95. Bill was the first Rotarian in the district to serve as governor. Bill and Kathryn’s home and hearts were always open to Rotarian visitors from other countries.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, in Christ the King Church, 52473 US 33 North. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial with immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Christ Child Society, P.O. Box 1268, South Bend, IN 46624.
The Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, 289-1000, is in charge of arrangements.
